Support Seeking
Support can Relieve Stress
Support is a major source of help in times of stress. Support means:
- knowing that someone cares for you, understands you, and is there for you; and
- Obtaining information and assistance from other people and organizations.
Unfortunately, people who experience stress often suffer in silence. They avoid telling others about their fears, anxieties, guilt and stress, and their silence may make their troubles worse. You are not alone in the world, and when you fully realize this, you can better manage your stress.
Talk. Talking it out gets it off your chest. Sharing with others in a group situation lets us know we're not alone. Sharing with others broadens our perspective. When we talk about our problems with others, we are able to understand them better and see them in a different light, which is most important in the management of stress.
A problem that has been kept to oneself is frequently distorted and looks worse than it is. When shared with another person, you can see it better yourself. This also allows us to get feedback, which is also very important in understanding our problems.
